About the Islands

The San Juan Islands are situated in northern Puget Sound approximately 80 miles north of Seattle and approximately 80 south of Vancouver, British Columbia. San Juan Island is accessible by plane or by boat, and most popularly by Washington State Ferry. Friday Harbor, a quaint seaport, rises from the ferry landing and public marina where it is an easy stroll to the docks, parks, restaurants, shops, galleries and charming inns and B&B's.

San Juan Island is approximately 15 miles long and 8 miles wide, encompassing 55.4 square miles including 70 miles of waterfront, and is reportedly the second largest island of the San Juans. There are those who say it would be the largest island if they measured at low tide, because San Juan has much more beach.

San Juan Island is the most populated island, with about 6,000 year 'round residents. Friday Harbor is located on the Eastern side of San Juan Island. It is the only incorporated town in San Juan County and serves as the primary business and shopping district as well as the county seat.

On the north end of San Juan Island you will find Roche Harbor, a breath taking marine oriented resort community. The topography of San Juan Island ranges from mountainous on the north end to farmland in the central valleys and south end.
